Origin of the Cat

The first cats to be worshipped in Japan were at Todaiji and Kotoku-ji temples, with Kotoku-ji temple in Tokyo rumored to be the birthplace of the cat that beckons. The origin is that Naotaka Ii, the lord of Hikone, was returning from a hunting trip when he saw a cat waving at him, so he followed him into the temple and was lucky enough to escape a downpour of rain; the lord of Hikone, in order to honor the cat for saving him from getting wet, decided to build the temple as a family temple, and the waving cat accidentally rescued the temple from its financial dilemma
