From the pre-Qin Dynasty, when the smell of food or wine was used to worship the gods, to the Han Dynasty, when incense was burned to offer to the gods, the rising smoke of incense was linked to the smell of food or wine, and the concept of “incense symbolizes food, and the incense burner symbolizes food utensils” was born. Taiwanese folklore often describes the gods as “eating incense”, which is said to treat incense as food for the gods, believing that the gods, like human beings, need to eat every day, and that the continuous smoke of incense will preserve their spiritual energy.
